Pretty disgusting, but it happens. Some dogs like to eat feces. In fact some dogs will eat feces of other animals such as cats, rabbit, deer. This is a good way to pick up internal parasites, coccidia, giarida or worms. Dogs can do this if they are bored, stressed or anxious.
The best way to solve this problem is to keep feces picked up. There are products you can buy to put in their food that will make the feces taste horrible to them. Once a dog starts eating feces, it is difficult to get them to stop. It's a good idea to check with your vet to make sure this is not and underlying problem as to why your dog does this.
There are several theories as to why dogs do this but one can never really tell Some are:
1. They do this because they watch the mother dogs eat the baby feces.
2. They believe they might be punished by their owners for defecating so they will eat it to escape punishment.
3. Wolves, who in time of scarcity of food, would eat their feces as a way to supplement their diet.
4. Some dogs just like the taste. (YUCK)
